Too Much March Gaming

Aloy Portrait Horizon Zero Dawn Playstation

Robot dinosaurs, guardians, and massive maps oh my!

My favorite gamer problem in the world is happening again; March gaming is packed with such great large scale games, I don’t know where to find the time to play everything.  Now I know this is a sad excuse for a problem but with all the potential spoilers and the minefield of social media and fan arts out there just waiting to give away particularly great plot twists, it’s hard to decide what to play first.  Here are the two big contenders battling it out right now.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Technically this mammoth game came out last month but only by one day, plus by the time it downloaded I had lost half of that day so I am counting it in March gaming.   Instantly this beautiful game starts drawing you in even though it was a lot slower of a start than I expected from the trailers.  The visuals are amazing from the armor options for Aloy to the multicultural NPC character design to the great tribal villages and open world that allows your imagination to roam.

I look forward to the 20+ hour grind that this game offers. From the little bit I have had a chance to play the game seems very complete and well put together.  The crafting is always a favorite game play mechanic of mine even if it means hunting my beloved foxes.  I will admit though the gameplay feels a little too familiar.  Even the Focus, (aka Blutooth) which I thought would bring some uniqueness to the gameplay, simply activated something very similar to detective mode from the Batman Arkham series.  The combat is still very well done and although the melee gives me a headache, the bow more than makes up for it.

Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild

My first impression of this game was a touch of panic from the map size.  This game could take forever if you wanted it to.  Most people have said it took between 40-50 hours to finish the main which surprises me given the size.  What also surprised me was the tower climbs to reveal the map.  This was probably my least favorite mechanic from Assassin’s Creed so if I never saw it again that would be okay with me.  Happily though the climb was no where near as tedious.  I was also surprised at how excited I was to see the first clay pot I could smash.  A pointless throw back but still it brought me joy.

Overall the game seems well done, enjoyable and big enough to keep me entertained for a long time.  And yet I think it is going to go on the back burner for now.  Now I will warn you: I am not a Legend of Zelda fangirl.  I picked up Breath of the Wild for the Switch mostly because it was the big launch title and the best way to test out the new system.  I also picked up Bomberman but that isn’t exactly a graphic giant.

More March Gaming

Other releases this month that I am going to put off getting include Nier:Automata on PS4 and I am Setsuna on the Nintendo Switch.  I know I am already late to play Setsuna but I really want a JRPG for my Switch until Atlus can get us something.  Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands also released this month and is a massive open world game but after the only thing I like about the beta was the alpacas/llamas that were just part of the landscape, this is an easy hard pass for me.

Still the month is not that far along and we haven’t even had a chance to talk about the biggest bad boy Mass Effect Andromeda.  I will be the first to say I am equal parts nervous and excited to be back in this beloved galaxy.  Well technically it is a new galaxy but you know what I mean.  Hopefully this will be as amazing as its big brother and not just a heartless money grab cashing in on our love.  If you can’t tell I am leaning toward heartless money grab.

Speaking of money grabs Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix releasing 3/28/17.  Although I gave up on the hope of a Kingdom Hearts 3 a long time ago, I keep saying I want to go back and play the originals.  This may get put off until summer when I usually hit a gaming rut due to only sports titles being released.

Putting down the new console

So in a controversial move I have decided to give up on Link’s newest adventure and a handful of other games for now in favor of the new IP,  Horizon Zero Dawn.  Now I have to get back to playing so I can finish before Mass Effect release.  That gives me two weeks to finish my first play through on that before Persona 5.  Oh crap March gaming problems are bleeding into April!  What’s a gamer to do?
